Gainsborough Trinity host fellow Vanarama National League North side, Boston United, in the Lincolnshire County Cup final at the Martin and Co Arena on Tuesday evening. The Holy Blues come into the contest after picking up a critical 1-0 victory against FC United of Manchester on Saturday afternoon. The narrow win helped Trinity push four points clear of the relegation zone after losing two games on the bounce that ended an undefeated run of six matches that included five wins.

Boston United appeared to be turning a corner after beating Leamington and drawing against Stockport County but defeat to high-flying Harrogate Town left them rooted in the relegation zone this weekend. It was new manager Craig Elliott’s first game in charge after five defeats in six matches before the minor rejuvenation plummeted the Pilgrims into the drop zone under the previous regime.

The visitors comfortably defeated Grimsby Town in the semi-finals and saw off Lincoln United earlier in the season to reach this point of the competition. Lincoln City and Grantham Town were the teams disposed of by the Holy Blues in the previous rounds.

These sides are used to meeting each other during the winter months with back-to-back fixtures played out during the Christmas period last season. Boston took the lead before being pegged back for a 1-1 draw in South Lincolnshire on Boxing Day, before the Pilgrims came from a goal behind to win 2-1 on New Year's Day in Gainsborough. The exact same fixtures are scheduled for this campaign meaning that this evening’s meeting is the first of three within six weeks.

Trinity have not defeated their Lincolnshire rivals in the last three league meetings between the sides and will be hoping to repeat the performance of September 2015 that saw them win 2-0 with Nathan Jarman adding the second that afternoon.
