FC United of Manchester Match Preview

We may still only be in the first half of the season but Saturday’s contest between Gainsborough Trinity and FC United of Manchester is a critical one at the foot of the Vanarama National League North. The clash represents the opportunity for either side to pull several points clear of the relegation places, whilst a defeat could see one of these clubs slip closer to, or possibly into in Trinity’s case, the bottom three come Saturday evening.

FC United have been rejuvenated since long-standing manager Karl Marginson departed. Three wins in their last four, including a midweek comeback against Alfreton, have lifted them out of the relegation zone and two points above the Holy Blues. Trinity have also enjoyed a good spell of form, with ten points accumulated in four league games before the defeat to Brackley Town last weekend.

Dave Frecklington’s side have enjoyed a large quantity of success thus far when responding from going a goal behind. However, in last season’s two fixtures against the club born from disgruntled Manchester United fans in the wake of the Glazer family taking control of the Red Devils, Trinity took the lead on both occasions before finding themselves on the end of defeats.

Nathan Jarman opened the scoring when we hosted last December, only for an 83rd-minute penalty and last-minute winner to send FC United home with all three points. Trinity were blitzed 5-1 by their hosts in a nail-biting final day of the season but results went in favour of the Holy Blues to leave them celebrating despite the heavy defeat.

After a lacklustre start to this campaign for the Lancashire side, Jason Gilchrist has been the star player for FC United with eight league goals to his name at an average of two in every three matches.
